How It All Started
The first market took place on 10th July 1999 in the Myre Park, Forfar where a large marquee was erected with a wide array of stalls. Tom Mitchell from Puddledub Pork took part in the first market and said " it was this market that convinced me that we could sell our own animals and make a living from it, I will never forget the enthusiasm of the Forfar folk that day" From the incredible success and popularity of this market, Angus Farmers’ Market was formed and Puddledub Pork is one of our most popular stalls and they attend both Montrose and Forfar twelve months of the year. The first Montrose market was in October 2005 in the High Street where it still happens to this day and enjoys a loyal following from the local people whatever the weather! The weather is no longer a problem for the Forfar market as in June 2012 the market moved to a fantastic indoor site at the Strathmore Hall, part of the Forfar Mart in John Street.
The primary aim of any farmers market is to support local farmers and producers, who sell produce they have grown or made. Angus Farmers’ Market stallholders are primarily Angus based, however many come from further afield like Aberdeenshire, Fife and Perthshire to provide a wide range of interesting products to local consumers. Angus Farmers’ Market is not only about food but also provides a platform for ‘makers’ of items such as soap, jewellery, woollen items and artwork. The market welcomes community groups, local promotions and entertainment to participate in their markets too.
Angus Farmers’ Market offers customers a loyalty card scheme whereby customers get their card stamped each time they visit a market. Each completed loyalty card gives them entry to a prize draw to win £50 in market vouchers and it is drawn four times a year. You can also buy Angus Farmers' Market gift vouchers which are in denominations of £5. They are valid for 12 months.
